Empowered for Greater Works!
Anchor Scripture:
“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”
John 14:12 (NIV)
As we enter the month of August, our hearts are stirred by one of the most astonishing promises Jesus ever made to His followers: “whoever believes in me … will do even greater works.”
At first glance, this feels almost impossible. Greater works than Jesus? The one who healed the sick, opened blind eyes, walked on water, and called the dead back to life? Yet He said it and we know He never speaks empty words.
This promise isn’t about us outshining Jesus, it’s about us continuing His mission with the empowerment He gives. He promised that when He returned to the Father, He would send the Holy Spirit to equip and empower us to carry His Kingdom into the world.
This means every believer is called to more than just attending church – we are called to impact lives, to bring hope to dark places, and to extend the love and power of God into our communities.
What Does “Greater Works” Look Like Today?
- Reaching the Unchurched: Our city centre location is no accident. Every conversation, every smile, every invitation can be a seed that transforms a life.
- Compassion in Action: Jesus healed bodies and hearts. Our “greater works” might look like praying for a sick neighbour, mentoring a young person, or feeding a struggling family.
- Carrying His Presence Everywhere: You don’t have to hold a microphone to do greater works. Every workplace, classroom, and street can be your mission field when you carry the love of Christ within you.
Greater works are not always flashy – they are often quiet, consistent acts of love that change the world one life at a time.
We Are Already Empowered
Sometimes we hold back because we feel unqualified, but Jesus never said “greater works” were for pastors or preachers alone. He said: “whoever believes in me …”, that means you and me.
If you believe in Jesus, you are already empowered. His Spirit within you is more than enough to bring light where there is darkness, to speak life where there is despair, and to see miracles in everyday moments.
As Acts 1:8 reminds us (NIV):
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
This month let’s live aware of the power we carry.
Step out.
Speak up.
Serve boldly.
And watch how God turns ordinary moments into extraordinary testimonies.
A Call to Action
- Pray daily for opportunities to be a blessing to someone.
- Take one bold step of faith each week – share your testimony, offer to pray for someone, volunteer, or serve in a new way.
- Stay connected to the source – you cannot do greater works without daily fellowship with God through prayer, worship, and the Word.
This August, we’re believing for an outpouring of God’s power over our church and our city. We invite you to be part of it. Come worship with us, grow in faith, and step into the “greater works” Jesus promised.
