Occasionally, a conversation reminds us not only of where we are but of how far we’ve come. In this week’s episode of Daily Grace, Pastor James sat down with worship leader and long-time friend of the house, Minister Dayo Bello, to reflect on the journey of faith, ministry, and the remarkable move of God in our new city-centre building.
As Dayo shared his heart, his stories became more than just moments, they became mirrors. They held up valuable lessons that speak not just to ministers or musicians, but to anyone who has ever dared to follow God’s calling, face challenges, and hold on to faith through the unknown.
Here are some of the life-changing lessons we can all draw from this powerful exchange:
-
Start Small, Stay Faithful
Dayo began as a drummer, not as a headline act. One unexpected Sunday, he was asked to lead worship because no one else was available. That moment, which could have seemed insignificant, became a divine turning point.
Lesson: You don’t need a platform to start, just a willing heart. Be faithful where you are, and God will do the rest.
“Don’t despise the small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)
-
God Sees the Sacrifice
Years ago, when Dayo visited RCCG Solid Rock Derby, he witnessed people worshipping outside in freezing temperatures because the building couldn’t contain them all. The sight moved him – and Pastor James – to tears. That same congregation now gathers in a facility more than eleven times larger, right in the heart of the city.
Lesson: God sees the tears, the effort, the cold nights, the unseen labour. And in time, He responds – often in ways we couldn’t imagine.
“This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Matthew 6:8 (MSG)
-
Purpose Over Payment
In an era where ministry can be treated like a performance, Dayo reminded us of something powerful: not every church can pay, and that should never be the measure of whether we serve. True ministry is about impact, not income.
Lesson: Ministry is a calling, not a business deal. Serving small congregations with sincerity often opens doors money never could.
“The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.” Proverbs 11:24 (MSG)
-
Family Is the Foundation
Amidst all the travel and ministration, Dayo credits a supportive family – especially his wife- for helping him maintain balance. Their shared understanding of his calling has helped him thrive both on and off stage.
Lesson: Purpose thrives in healthy partnerships. Before chasing the dream, secure the support. Your calling is better served when your home is at peace.
-
Let Your Gift Serve Others, Not Just Yourself
Dayo’s testimony includes sleeping in phone booths and saving up his own money to create music. Yet through it all, he kept showing up. Today, he ministers globally but never forgets the value of humility and consistency.
Lesson: Your gift is not for your ego, it’s for service. When we honour the giver of the gift, He multiplies the impact.
-
Never Underestimate What God Can Build
What started in a small venue with limited space has now grown into a vibrant church in the heart of the city – a space filled with light, music, joy, and transformation. Not just a building, but a testament to what God can do with people who persevere.
Lesson: The journey may be long, but God is never wasteful. Every step – even the difficult ones – is part of His blueprint.
“Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?” Isaiah 43:19 (MSG)
A Final Reflection
If you’re reading this and feeling like your start is too small, your path too slow, or your gift unnoticed – be encouraged. These testimonies remind us that God is not in a hurry, but He is always on time. Faithfulness, humility, sacrifice, and service still matter in this world.
We are not here by accident. We are here because God is writing a story, and we are part of it – not just in buildings and services, but in every unseen act of obedience along the way.
Keep showing up. Keep serving. Keep trusting.
God is still up to something.
