October: Courage Under Fire

Anchor Scripture: “But the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.” Daniel 11:32 (NKJV)

The world is turning up the heat.

Cultural pressure.
Personal battles.
Voices telling you to compromise, blend in, just go along to get along.
It’s loud out there and if we’re honest, sometimes it feels easier to stay quiet than to stand up.

But October brings a reminder that shakes us awake: Those who know their God will be strong.

Not shaken.
Not silenced.
Not swayed.

Strong and positioned to do great things for Him.

Daniel 11:32 wasn’t written for peaceful times, it was penned in the middle of chaos – a season when people were abandoning truth, seduced by flattery and lies. The pressure to conform was crushing! Yet in the centre of that storm, a remnant refused to bow.

What made them different? They knew their God.

Not knew about Him., not just attended services or quoted verses, they knew Him – intimately, deeply, unshakeably, and that knowledge became their courage.

Here’s the truth we need to grab hold of this month: real courage doesn’t flow from confidence in yourself, it doesn’t come from talent, titles, or tough talk. It comes from knowing God personally and trusting Him completely.

What Does “Courage Under Fire” Actually Look Like?

It’s staying faithful when it costs you something.
It’s speaking truth wrapped in love when everyone else is staying silent.
It’s choosing holiness over hype, prayer over pressure and obedience over applause.

For students: It’s refusing to cheat when everyone else is copying answers. It’s standing against gossip even when it makes you the outsider.

For workers: It’s integrity when the office culture rewards shortcuts. It’s honouring your word even when no one’s watching.

For families: It’s building your home on God’s Word when the world calls it old-fashioned. It’s leading your children toward truth when culture pulls them toward compromise.

For all of us: It’s showing up to church when you could sleep in. It’s tithing when the bills are stacking up. It’s forgiving when you have every right to hold a grudge.

Courage under fire isn’t always dramatic, it’s not always loud resistance or bold declarations. Sometimes, it’s the quiet strength of simply not giving in.

It’s the student who logs off when everyone else is binge-watching Netflix.
The employee who doesn’t join in when the conversation turns toxic.
The spouse who fights for the marriage when it would be easier to walk away.

That’s courage and it matters more than you know.

How Do We Build This Kind of Strength?

Real courage isn’t something you manufacture; it’s something you cultivate. Here’s how:

  1. Know God Personally

The more time you spend with God – in prayer, in the Word, in worship – the stronger your foundation becomes. This isn’t about checking religious boxes, it’s about relationship, intimacy, and time.

You can’t stand strong in a God you barely know.

  1. Stay Rooted in the Word

When culture shifts, the Word anchors you.
When opinions fly, Scripture steadies you.
Don’t just read the Bible, let it read you. Let it expose your blind spots, let it shape how you think, what you say, and how you live.

A Christian without the Word is like a soldier without a weapon. Defenceless.

  1. Surround Yourself with the Right People

You were never meant to stand alone. Community isn’t optional, it’s essential. Courage is contagious. When you’re surrounded by people who know and love God, your faith gets stronger. Their boldness fuels yours and their testimony reminds you that God is still moving.

Iron sharpens iron, isolation weakens it.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid of the Fire

Remember the three Hebrew boys? The fire didn’t destroy them, it revealed who was walking with them. Sometimes God doesn’t remove the pressure, he doesn’t take you out of the hard place, he shows up in it and when He does, the fire loses its power.

What was meant to break you becomes the place where God shows off, where your faith gets proven and where your testimony gets written.

Don’t run from the fire. Let God meet you in it.

This October, courage rises in Solid Rock Derby.
We are drawing a line in the sand.
We’re not backing down.
We’re not playing small.
We’re not shrinking back to make others comfortable.
We are standing strong – in our classrooms, in our workplaces, in our homes, in our hearts.

Not because we’re perfect, not because we have it all figured out, but because we know our God. We were made for this, built for exploits and called to be courageous.

The heat doesn’t intimidate us, it refines us.
The pressure doesn’t crush us, it reveals what we’re made of.

Whether you’re in the middle of the fire right now or just need a fresh infusion of boldness, you belong here.

Come be strengthened in worship.
Come be equipped by the Word.
Come be reminded that you’re not facing this alone.

God is with you and so are we.

Let this be the month your courage rises.
Let this be the season you stop shrinking back.
Let this be the moment you realise: you were made for more than survival; you were made for exploits.
